I still want to be able to go hard so I'd like to have a clipless pedal option. On the other hand, if I go flat bar, the SPD compatible platform combo pedals are intriguing for times I just want to go for a leisure ride without changing shoes.

My SPD shoes are stiffer than any flat-pedal shoe I have seen, but the larger the flat pedal, the less this matters. I do get more float with my SPD shoes. Foot retention.

WEBI often would like the control of flat bars, but don't typically need suspension. So I'm thinking either a flat bar gravel bike or a rigid mountain bike. But so many mountain bikes are solely 1x now, which I find limiting. So anyways, I keep picturing a Trek Checkpoint (or something similar) with a little longer stem and 690-720 wide flat bars.
