For those who have taken a norwegian panama canal cruise, I am not clear on what happens at the port identified on the itinerary as Panama Canal/Gatun Lake. What I think I understand is that the ship goes through some locks to Gatun Lake and then back out again? If that's the case, would you advise staying on the ship or getting off and doing an excursion? Based on the schedule it looks like it then docks in Colon for 3 hours. Did you get off and doing anything in Colon?

Hi Rhona61, are there independent tours outside the port of Panama Canal / Gatun Lake that cruise passengers can avail? Some reviews said we are not allowed to leave the ship unless we take the excursions offered by the cruise lines. Pardon my understanding on this as I have never been in S American cruise before. Some cruise lines offer trips on the lake, it depends on how long the ship is to remain in the lake before going back out. We originally had a tour scheduled but since the ship was only going to be there for a couple of hours it was cancelled. Need to check with the cruise line on the timing in the lake and it could change the day before or the day of which makes for contracting with someone other than the cruise line tough.
