Advocate Health Care plans to spend $1 billion overhauling how it provides health care on the South Side of Chicago — replacing Advocate Trinity Hospital with a smaller facility with far fewer beds, while expanding access to primary and specialty care.

The hospital system hopes the investment closes Chicago's 30-year life expectancy gap between residents on the South and North sides.

The health system plans to expand community sites and services, beef up its chronic care management and SDOH programs, add 1,000 new employees and build a new hospital to replace the aging Advocate Trinity Hospital.

The hospital will be on the former U.S. Steel South Works site where a quantum campus is taking shape near the lakefront. It replaces the current Advocate Trinity Hospital with a $300M new development. The 53-bed hospital will be on 23 acres on the northern end of the developer Related Midwest's 8080 S. DuSable Lake Shore Drive master plan.
