The Red Wings address the elephant not in the room, discussing the conspicuous absence of Moritz Seider from the opening day of camp

TRAVERSE CITY — Split into groups, the Detroit Red Wings looked full of energy on their first day of training camp – but it was hard not to notice who wasn't there. Moritz Seider, No. 1 on the team's defense depth chart, wasn't at Centre Ice Arena Thursday because the restricted free agent still does not have a new contract.

The Detroit Red Wings have signed Lucas Raymond to a huge eight-year contract. This signing completes one of the team’s more important pieces of business for the summer. However, there is still one piece of business left for Detroit before the season begins.

"I know I have a next level," Larkin said Thursday at the opening day of Red Wings training camp. "I would like to see what I can do. I'd like to be a dominant player like I have been when I'm healthy. And that's a big thing for me is staying healthy this year and trying to dominate."

The Red Wings will practice and scrimmage at Centre I.C.E. Arena through Sunday, when camp concludes with a Red and White game (2 p.m., streamed on detroitredwings.com). The preseason opener is Wednesday in Chicago.
