Despite people wading foot-deep through floodwaters, the rising levels were still within minor flood stage at the harbor, including at Long Wharf, where tide water spilled onto walkways and roads and even submerged parking lots.

Higher-than-average tides combined with a storm system over 100 miles off the coast of the Northeast have caused problems for coastal communities from Florida to New England. Hundreds of miles of coastline are under weather alerts and coastal flooding is expected to remain a concern into the first week of astronomical autumn.

King tides bring unusually high water levels, and they can cause local tidal flooding. Over time, sea-level rise is raising the height of tidal systems. Average daily water levels are rising along with the oceans. As a result, high tides are reaching higher and extending farther inland than in the past.

You may have noticed that certain areas near the coast and roadways are flooded. Or, if you’re lucky enough to have waterfront property or a fixed dock, it might be submerged underwater.

The yearly rate of high tide flooding is more than twice that from just 20 years ago because of sea level rise, but flooding fluctuates year to year.
