The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) on Saturday said Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island had 25 volcanic earthquakes and an increased volume of sulfur dioxide flux in the past 24 hours.

The public must not be complacent as Mount Kanlaon in Negros Island could still erupt, similar to what happened in June, Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) Director Teresito Bacolcol said on Friday.

About 300 residents within 2.5 miles of the Kanlaon volcano crater were evacuated on Tuesday as a precaution, according to Canlaon LGU.

A massive eruption similar to what happened last June 3 could occur at Mount Kanlaon in Negros Island as the volcano remains under heightened alert, PHIVOLCS said on Friday.

A steam-driven explosion of Kanlaon Volcano is likely as heightened alert prevails. A phreatic eruption similar to that on June 3, 2024 could occur, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said. In a report on GMA Integrated News, PHIVOLCS reiterated that Alert Level 2 means Kanlaon is in a state of increasing unrest.
