An American company will soon design and build the future small surface combatant (SSC) ship for the U.S. Navy. HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division has been selected to build the vessel. The U.S. Navy has canceled its original plans for the Constellation-class frigate program, limiting it to just the two ships already being constructed.

The Navy still needs new frigates, and is still intent on building them. But it must make basic changes to its acquisition process to avoid a second Constellation fiasco.

NAVSEA released the RFI (Request for Information) to the industry at the beginning of 2025. Following this, in July, Damen received a Technical Data Package (TDP) award from NAVSEA for the LST100. The design has now been selected as the basis for the LSM class.

The Navy paid Dutch shipbuilder Damen $3.3 million for the technical data package for the LST-100 tank landing ship that will serve as the Landing Ship Medium, Naval Sea Systems Command officials told USNI News.
