The U.S. Senate will prepare stopgap spending bill that would avert a looming partial government shutdown, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said on Thursday, as House Republicans offered no hint as to what their next move would be.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) announced Thursday that he will act later in the day to advance a bipartisan government funding bill after Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) failed to pass a partisan six-month funding measure that was tied to voter registration reform.

Congress has 12 days left to approve a short-term government funding bill before the shutdown deadline, although leaders in the Republican House and Democratic Senate haven’t felt the need to start negotiations just yet.
