In a flurry of legal requests leading up to Freddie Owens’ scheduled execution, his attorneys continue to try to get it stopped either by a court order or an unlikely reprieve from South Carolina’s governor.

Freddie Owens is scheduled to be executed at 6 p.m. on Friday, when he will be brought into South Carolina’s death chamber and given a lethal injection. Details about how he spends his final day, however, will not be made public due to the state’s shield law and the S.C. Department of Corrections policy.

Owens is set to be executed by lethal injection in the state's first execution in 13 years. This despite a key witness who testified against Owens now proclaiming his innocence.

His last chance to avoid death is for Republican South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster to commute his sentence to life in prison. McMaster said he will follow historical tradition and announce his decision minutes before the lethal injection begins when prison officials call him and the state attorney general to make sure there is no reason to delay the execution.
