Deutsche Telekom AG chose Nokia Oyj to roll out more than 3,000 open network sites in northern Germany, the Finnish equipment provider said on Wednesday.

The rollout, which is already underway in the Neubrandenburg region, will see Nokia replace equipment from the incumbent vendor, Huawei. Partnering with Fujitsu, Nokia will provide O-RAN-compliant technology designed to modernise Telekom’s network.

The telecoms company will supply Open Radio Access Network technology, which uses cloud-based software and allows operators to build telecom networks using equipment from different suppliers.

Nokia has signed a contract with Deutsche Telekom to roll out a mobile network using Open Radio Access Network (ORAN) in more than 3,000 sites in Germany, the Finnish telecom equipment maker said in a statement on Wednesday.

Finnish vendor Nokia has won a contract to deploy more than 3,000 sites for Deutsche Telekom's (DT) Open RAN network in Germany. In winning the contract, it marks a return to providing RAN equipment to Deutsche Telekom for Nokia, after DT chose to work with Ericsson for parts of its network in 2017.
