How fitting that Orlando’s first bigtime professional sports championship was won by a team called the Pride – sort of poetic justice for a city that has long waited for a championship it could be proud to call its own.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Barbra Banda scored in the 37th minute to give the Orlando Pride their first National Women’s Soccer League championship with a 1-0 victory over the Washington Spirit on Saturday night.

In a season full of worthy contenders, it was the league leader Orlando Pride who took home the top prize. Forward Barbra Banda, who has led the team for much of the season, scored the game’s lone goal.
