An investigative journalist who was among the first to raise concerns about the injuries suffered by suspected murder victim Katie Simpson before her death believes she was later placed under PSNI surveillance.

A police ombudsman investigation has found that PSNI inquiries into the death of showjumper Katie Simpson was failed and flawed.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has said it was not "rigorous enough" when investigating the death of showjumper Katie Simpson. "We did not act quickly enough in responding to some of the concerns that were raised around Katie's death," added Ass Chief Con Davy Beck.

The PSNI has admitted it “must and will do better” after the Police Ombudsman found the force “failed” the family of showjumper Katie Simpson with a “flawed” investigation. Ms Simpson died in hospital six days after she was assaulted at her home near Derry in August 2020.

The PSNI has acknowledged deficiencies in its investigation into the murder of 21-year-old showjumper Katie Simpson.
