At 11:40 p.m. on April 14, 1912, the British ocean liner RMS Titanic struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic at a speed of 20 knots. It slipped below the surface at 2:20 a.m. the following morning, according to the National Museum of American History. It was a disaster that resulted in the deaths of 1,500 people on the ship's maiden voyage.
A life vest worn by a survivor of the Titanic, which famously sunk on its maiden voyage in 1912, is being auctioned by Henry Aldridge & Son Ltd., an auction house based in England. The vest was worn by first class passenger Laura Mabel Francatelli, who was a 22 at the time.
A life jacket worn by a passenger on the RMS Titanic has sold at auction for 670,000 pounds, which is more than $900,000.
