French President Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday he will travel to Washington to try to convince President Donald Trump that his interests were in line with European allies and that showing any weakness to Russia's Vladimir Putin would make it harder to deal with China and Iran.

French President Emmanuel Macron is coming to Washington next week, national security adviser Mike Waltz said on Wednesday. Macron called for an emergency “informal” meeting with world leaders just days ago in Paris to discuss European security and the challenges posed by President Donald Trump’s administration.

President Macron’s visit to Washington was full of handshakes and smiles, even as his relationship with President Trump seems to be a bit rocky.

Macron is hoping to persuade Trump when the two leaders meet on the third anniversary of the war in Ukraine to include European leaders in talks between Russia and the United States.
