The program, in state parks, is in its 32nd year, dating to a single hike at Blue Hills Reservation in Milton. Many states have similar health initiatives to kick off the year.

Scorers of hikers will gather at Houghton's Pond in the Blue Hills Reservation at 11 a.m. on New Year's Day to take part in the traditional First Day Hikes, which will begin at noon.

Friday, hundreds of people did just that, not only in the Blue Hills, where four walks took place, but at 10 other parks all over the state, and at 1,000 more places across the country.
