Energy officials announced plans to restart a nuclear reactor at Three Mile Island, marking a new partnership between Constellation Energy and Microsoft. The initiative comes five years after the final nuclear reactor on Three Mile Island was shut down.

Nuclear energy has a complicated history in the United States, due in large part of Three Mile Island itself. In the 20th century, it was billed as a clean energy of the future but the partial meltdown of TMI's Unit 2 in 1979 soured public support and helped dampen many other proposed nuclear plants.

A nuclear reactor at the notorious Three Mile Island site in Pennsylvania is to be activated for the first time in five years after its owners, Constellation Energy, struck a deal to provide power to Microsoft’s proliferating artificial intelligence operations.

Lawmakers welcomed the news about the proposed restart of Three Mile Island's Unit 2 reactor as an economic generator for the region although some point out this private arrangement to supply Microsoft with power does little to address the public's growing demand for electricity.
