Lionsgate and Icon Productions announced Tuesday that the two-part project would be released more than two decades after “The Passion of the Christ,” which became a global phenomenon.

— lionsgate (@Lionsgate) August 5, 2025 On May 15 it was announced that Lionsgate had been chosen as the studio partnering with Gibson’s Icon Productions on the upcoming film.

Lionsgate also owns the Icon library, which includes the rights to the 2004 hit “ Passion of the Christ.” No release plans were announced for the film.

Mel first met Rosalind in 2014 when she began working on a script for his production company, Icon Productions. The California native majored in literature at Emerson College.

Lionsgate will join Gibson and Brucey Davey’s Icon Productions to mount a follow to the movie which long held the mark as the biggest domestic-grossing R-rated film of all time.
