Republican Sen. James Lankford of Oklahoma said Tulsi Gabbard could be confirmed as President-elect Donald Trump’s director of national intelligence—if she meets one condition in particular. Appearing on the Wall Street Journal’s opinion podcast,

"Because if she comes out and says, 'No, I want to oppose all 702 authority,' that literally shuts down all of our national defense gathering."

Gabbard reportedly struggled to sway Republican senators, with some questioning her qualifications for the top intelligence role.

The Senate Intelligence Committee will begin hearings soon after the new Congress takes its seats on Jan. 3. The attacks on her started early. On Nov. 13, “Nearly 100 former senior U.S. diplomats and intelligence and national security officials,” as AP described them, signed a letter calling for closed-door hearings.
