Chipotle Mexican Grill is finally ready to catapult its restaurants into the future with the introduction of its Autocado machine and the Augmented Makeline, a device that will make the bowl-making process totally seamless.

The Autocado cuts, cores, and peels avocados for kitchen crew to mash into guacamole. It’s being used at a restaurant in Huntington Beach. The other robot, the Augmented Makeline, is an assembly line that puts together bowls and salads for workers to lid; this one’s being used at a restaurant in Corona del Mar.

Through its Cultivate Next venture fund, Chipotle has invested in Vebu, a product development company that has co-created Autocado, and Hyphen, a foodservice platform that automates kitchen operations and has co-developed Chipotle’s Augmented Makeline

Chipotle Mexican Grill said Monday it is currently testing its Autocado prototype, which it calls a cobot, or collaborative robot, at a restaurant in Huntington Beach, Calif.

This is the future Chipotle customers want: one with equitable burrito bowl assembly and no need to see who got more guac or cheese. Chipotle is debuting new automated machines in some restaurant chains that will make portion sizes more consistent and prepare avocados for guacamole faster.

Chipotle moved an automated bowl-and-salad maker and an avocado-processing robot out of its test kitchen and into a couple of locations in California. The chain announced the deployment on Monday and said feedback will determine whether it makes a broader rollout of the technology.
