South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands (SGSSI) is a British Overseas Territory in the southern Atlantic Ocean. It is a remote and inhospitable collection of islands, consisting of South Georgia and a chain of smaller islands known as the South Sandwich Islands.

South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands is a haven for wildlife. They are home to about five million seals of four different species, and 65 million breeding birds of 30 different species. Amongst these is the world’s only sub-Antarctic songbird, the endemic South Georgia pipit.

South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands are a collection of exceptionally remote islands in the Southern Atlantic. Although considered as one entity they represent two physically distinct island groups, with the South Georgia cluster ranging between 560 and 800km west of the South Sandwich Island arc (Figure 1).

With a backbone of steeply uplifted mountain ranges (Allardyce and Salvesen Ranges) and at least 20 peaks over 2,000 m altitude (culminating at 2,965 m on the island’s summit, Mt Paget), South Georgia is the highest of all sub-Antarctic islands.
