I can’t believe I got to see coatimundis in the wild. They’re the rarest animal I’ve ever seen in Arizona. They live all the way down to Argentina and they’re a part of the raccoon family, though their tails are much longer. They’re diurnal and they eat insects. They’ll eat anything, snake, tarantula, lizard, but they like grubs and different insects the most. They’re beautiful animals. If you happen to see one, well, you’ll have done better than I have the last 30 years I’ve lived here. #coati

An unusual animal was spotted in Arizona’s Coronado National Forest! A coatimundi, which looks like a cross between a raccoon and an anteater, was seen wandering the snow-covered Mount Lemmon in the Santa Catalina Mountains. U.S. Forest Service firefighters captured this video while doing prescribed burns in the area. The coatimundi, or coati, is a member of the raccoon family found from Arizona to South America. “It has a long snout with a flexible nose which it uses to root in the soil for gru

If you watch a coati walk in reverse, its tail sure looks like the long neck and head of a brontosaurus! But they're not. These are coatis, mammals from the same family as raccoons, that are found in South America. Special thanks to the San Miguelito Jaguar Conservation Ranch and WWF-Peru for the footage of these mammals. I found this band of about 20 White-nosed Coati about 50 miles outside Phoenix. Coatis (pronounced ko-AH-teez) look like a monkey, dog, raccoon, and an anteater decided to have a fun party! Coati is NOT short for "Coatimundi", contrary to popular belief. Coati refers to the large bands of females and juveniles, and Coatimundi refers to the larger males who live alone. According to The Encyclopedia of Mammals, it means “lone coati” in Guarani (an Indigenous language of Brazil). The internet is a

Lola the coati had a great time inspecting me today, making sure to put her wet articulating nose inside my ears and up my nose 😂. Coatimundis are in the raccoon family and are native to south, central, and southern North America including Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. There are several species across that range. Coatis are very cute, but do NOT make good pets and have large teeth and can easily hospitalize a person. ~~If you would like to donate to the care of the sanctuary animals, we great
