Training crocodiles develops a safer relationship between the crocodile and the zookeepers. Our Cuban Crocodile is trained to go to a Feeding Station, where we can monitor her food intake and her behavior. This helps us to see any issues that might need medical treatment. Positive reinforcement is the building block of every animal training program at Zoo Atlanta, and here, you see the Herpetology Team and the African slender-snouted crocodiles in action. The crocodiles are learning several voluntary behaviors such as stepping on a scale, patiently waiting when it’s the other crocodile’s turn to eat, exiting the water for veterinary exams, and shifting into other areas when their habitat is being cleaned.
