It may not be what some of you want to hear, because some of you have been lead to believe that the secret is in the theory. You're waiting for that one magical scale to change your playing. That one magical chord. That one magical, complex theory topic. But it's not coming, and it never will. Because the thing you're looking for is right in front of you - it

Charlie Tran • Jazz Piano Coach on Instagram: "You. Don't. Need. More. Scales!!! You simply need to learn how to be musical with a scale. Nothing is wrong with the amount of scales you know. Think about it like this - a master could make one scale sound infinitely more exciting than an amateur can with every scale in the book. One way you could start getting more out of a scale is by learning some chromaticism. Just take a major scale and explore the notes that don't belong, and find ways to mak

Charlie Tran • Jazz Piano Coach on Instagram: "Nothing can improve your playing if you don't have a strong sense of rhythm. And I mean NOTHING. Here in this video I demonstrate a deceivingly challenging comping rhythm, the Red Garland rhythm, as a way for you to test your rhythm. Make it a goal to get this rhythm at a faster tempo like 200 bpm. If you currently can't do it, then you need to prioritize it. Because even if you play the prettiest notes.. it'll sound bad if the rhythm is bad. So, it

If you're learning jazz, stop practicing chord progressions out of context and practice jazz standards. Unless you're practicing specific concepts such as soloing over a specific progression, figuring out two-handed comping voicings over a progression, etc., of course. Otherwise, jazz standards contain all the chord progressions already. And you'll be forced to play through progressions you didn't expect. But also many you would expect. You'll pick up patterns, and notice unusual instances. Lear

These two tips helped me transform my chords into those big, lush chords we hear in jazz. Now, I'd be lying if I said these two tips were "plug and play" in every single situation - because they're not. They a great place to start, but eventually you learn that there's always more nuance to any simple tip. Spreading out the notes of a chord results in what are known as spread voicings, and if you want a step-by-step approach to learning, building, and applying spread voicings to your playing, th

Only have 30min to practice? No problem. A seasoned music practicer can get more done in 30 minutes than an amateur in 3 hours. The steps are simple: 1) pick out a concept you're working on 2) apply it to a tune out of time to focus on note accuracy 3) apply it to a tune in time You might think that you need a certain level of proficiency in the fundamentals to do this, and you're partly right, but even something as simple as just playing the melody along with the bass note is an effective exerc

There's many ways to play arpeggios in jazz, but "jazz arpeggio" can also refer to a specific arpeggio we see all the time in jazz.. the 9th arpeggio. This is one of the core pieces of jazz language. Practice it for all the different chord types, but most importantly, practice it with the intention of integrating it into your vocabulary. We don't want to just get good at the jazz arpeggio as an exercise - we need to be able to seamlessly weave it into our soloing, and in this video I'll give you

Due to nature, certain keys pose certain challenges. Like in the tune "almost like being in love", in order to create a full sound you need to create huge spread voicings, sometimes spanning more than 3 octaves. If you play the same tune in the key of F going for that full sound, most of the work is already done for you by nature because it's a much lower key than Bb. Although you could probably get away with LH 7th chords in some keys, you definitely want to learn your spread voicings so that y

Playing the correct notes of the scale is just the first step to playing musical and intentional sounding solos. It's like adding flour to the pan to bake a cake - it's necessary, but there's so many more ingredients and steps before you get a cake that's worth eating. And not to mention, the first cake you bake most likely won't be your best one, either, so you'll have to experiment with making multiple cakes. In this video I'll show you how you can experiment with targeting the 3rds of each ch

Good exercises aren't supposed to sound like just exercises. They should also sound like music. With so many jazz exercises floating around the internet, it's hard to know which ones to invest your time into practicing. First, narrow down to the exercises that actually sound like music - the ones where you can immediately see how it would help. My functional voicings system is one of those exercises, but don't take my word for it. It's the EXACT system I've used for myself to get to where I am i

It’s important to make sense of every single note of a lick or any piece of soloing language. Because eventually, you’ll start to recognize similar patterns everywhere and that’s how language development starts. #bebop | Charlie Tran Piano
